5500 NEW POLICE OFFICERS TO JOIN RANKS

I am pleased to announce that before the end of June 2025, the SAPS will be advertising the recruitment of 5500 police trainees to join our ranks. Please download the SAPS Application Form. Their training will begin between January and February 2026. You may recall that we raised the age restriction for joining our ranks to 35 years old in accordance with the National Youth Policy.

The South African Police Service is South Africa’s national police force. South Africa’s 1,138 police stations are separated by province, with a Provincial Commissioner appointed in each.

Requirements to Join the South African Police Service

  • Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 35 during the recruiting process.
  • Candidates must have sat for, passed, and obtained their Grade 12 certificate.
  • Candidates must have a strong grasp of both English and any other language.
  • You must be prepared to take the oath of office.
  • Candidates must have no criminal record or an upcoming criminal trial.
  • Candidates must be of South African origin
  • You must have a South African identity card.

SAPS Recruitment Exercise & The Process

The SAPS recruitment exercise involves three (3) main stages, which are:

1. INDUCTION STAGE

The induction stage lasts one (1) month at an assigned police station, which the applicant must understudy and watch the actions of South African Police Service officers, understand how they carry out their tasks, and get on-the-job experience in policing.

2. BASIC TRAINING STAGE

The selected candidates will undergo eight months of training at an allocated South African Police Service Academy. There applicants are taught the ethics and discipline of police. They learn how to fight and defend themselves in dangerous circumstances, as well as how to protect the public. They are also taught how to handle problems peacefully and calmly. They learn about the country’s laws, human rights, and other topics.

3. PROBATION STAGE

After successfully passing the above two stages, namely the induction stage and the Basic Training Stage, the candidate will be enrolled in the South African Police Service force under probationary conditions for 12 months from the date of appointment, and once the candidate has successfully passed the conditions for the Probation Stage, the employment will be fully confirmed.

The candidate must guarantee that he or she maintains proper conduct before, during, and after the South African Police Service recruiting activity. Candidates who create shame to the South African Police Service may have their career terminated.

STRUCTURE OF THE BPDLP

The Learning Programme will last 24 months, including 12 months at the Academy and 12 months in the business. It will be divided into two periods at the academy and one at the workplace.

  • Phase One: Academy (10 months)
    • Foundational phase: will primarily focus on gaining the required knowledge and abilities.
    • Practical application of knowledge and skills
  • Phase Two: Workplace experience (12 months)
    • Workplace exposure at a station
  • Phase Three: Academy (2 months)
    • Integrated assessments

When police trainees finish their training and are declared competent, they are permanently recruited in the South African Police Service as constables.

The minimum credentials listed above establish an individual’s fundamental eligibility for employment with the South African Police Service (SAPS). Please be aware that the application procedure might be long. Depending on the individual’s circumstances, the procedure might take anything from a few months to more than a year.

When is the SAPS Application Opening for 2025

The SAPS application procedure for the 2025/2026 intake has not yet begun. However, the South African Police Service (SAPS) will advertise for the recruitment of 5500 police trainees by the end of June 2025, with training beginning in January and February 2026. For the first time, the SAPS will implement an online electronic recruiting system to expedite the application procedure.
