The Trainee Yard Official will participate in a thorough training program designed to provide you with the information and abilities required to work effectively as a Yard Official. This position is intended for those who are keen to advance within Transnet Freight Rail and contribute to its operations.

What Will You Do?

As a Trainee Yard Official, you will be required to:

• Complete Theoretical and Practical Training: To become a Yard Official, you must first attend and satisfactorily complete both theoretical and practical training sessions.
• Develop Competency: By the completion of the training term, you will have acquired the abilities required to conduct various tasks and operate assigned equipment.
• Meet Safety and Operational Goals: You will work to accomplish assignments in line with company strategies, always focusing on efficiency and safety.
• Maintain Training Records: Throughout your training, you will maintain a portfolio of evidence to track your progress and demonstrate your competency.
• Work Independently: After successfully completing your training, you will be responsible for handling your own responsibilities as a fully trained Yard Official.

What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:

Qualifications and Experience:

• Minimum Education: Grade 12 (Matric).
• Psychological Screening: Must pass a psychological battery test.
• Medical Fitness: Must pass the relevant medical tests (including eye and hearing tests).
• Computer Literacy: A basic understanding of computer systems is essential.
• Physical Fitness: The role requires a good level of physical fitness.

Skills & Knowledge:

• Yard Official Course: An understanding of yard operations and siding design.
• Shunting Procedures: Understanding how trains operate through a yard.
• Train Service and Act 85: Understanding of train services and railway regulations.
• Radio Train Order System: Proficiency in radio communication.
• Hazmat & Safety: Awareness of hazardous materials and high voltage safety.

Competencies:

• Problem Solving & Negotiating: Ability to handle stressful situations and find solutions to problems.
• Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Attention to Detail: Precision is key when working with train operations.
