University Application dates for 2025 Academic Year, including Closing Dates

Here are South African universities’ starting and ending dates for the 2025 academic year. Most of these universities will need an application fee. Even though you haven’t completed your National Senior Certificate yet, you will be able to apply to university with copies of your Grade 11 exam results. Your South African ID document is among the other essential documents.

NSFAS Bursaries and Student Loans

All of the universities and technological institutes listed above are public, hence they are eligible for NSFAS financing. Full bursaries are offered to students from households with an annual income of less than R350,000. Students from households with an annual income over this but less than R600,000 will be eligible for an NSFAS student loan.

NSFAS applications only open late in the year. It is important that you still apply for the university or college course that you are interested in when those applications open. If you wait until you are approved by NSFAS, it will be too late to apply for university.

National Benchmark Tests NBTs

Do you have to take National Benchmark Tests to enter university? The National Benchmark examinations evaluate if you are intellectually prepared for university.

Two tests are available: the AQL and the MAT. AQL stands for Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy, while MAT is an acronym for Mathematics.
